During eighteen sixty one, the company Harland and Wolff was formed. Mr. Gustav Wilhelm Wolff, born in Hamburg in 1834, along with Mr. Edward James Harland born during 1831, formed the business. During eighteen fifty eight Harland, who was the general manager at the time, purchased the small shipyard situated on Queen's Island. He bought the property from Robert Hickson, who was his employer.
Harland at one time purchased Hickson's shipyard and made his assistant Wolff a partner in the business. Gustav Wolff was Gustav Schwabe of Hamburg's nephew. He has invested mostly in the Bibby Line. The initial 3 ships that the brand new shipyard made were for that line. By being inventive, Harland made the business a successful venture. Among his famous ideas was increasing the overall strength of the ship by utilizing iron for the upper wodden decks. Also, he was able to increase the ship's capacity by giving the hulls a flatter bottom and a square cross section.
The business eventually experienced increasing pressures in the shipbuilding industry causing them to broaden their portfolio and shift their focus. They chose to focus more on structural engineering and design and less on building ships. The company also diversified into the fields of ship repair, offshore construction projects as well as competing for additional projects that had to do with construction and metal engineering.
Harland and Wolff had other interests, such as a series of bridges to be built in the Republic of Ireland and in Britain. These bridges comprise the restoration of both Dublin's Ha'penny Bridge and the James Joyce Bridge. During the 1980s, with the construction of the Foyle Bridge, their first venture into the civil engineering sector occurred.
The MV Anvil Point was the last shipbuilding project of Harland and Wolff to date. This was one of six near identical Point class sealift ships that was constructed to be used by the Ministry of Defense. The ship was launched during 2003, after being constructed under license from German shipbuilders Flensburger, Schiffbau-Gesellschaft.
The Advantages of a Man Lift
Man lifts offer a safe and easy way to repair problems at areas which are very high to reach by other ways. Mechanical lifts allow employees to lift safely to an elevated work place. Often, man lifts are utilized by service and construction employees to carry out work on buildings, light poles and other places which are too up high to reach by other means.
Safety
The main factor when using a man lift is of course taking safety into consideration. Ladders are not a practical alternative for extreme heights and hence man lifts are the perfect option for these kinds of areas. Most of these machines are equipped with emergency shut-off switches and safety rails to make worker safety a main concern.
Range
Man lifts can reach certain heights that other machines cannot reach. This machine was first utilized to pick fruit, but has evolved to take on other tasks. Like for example, they are usually used to do finishing work in the construction business and changing light bulbs. Commonly, man lifts can reach heights of twenty to one hundred feet.
There are smaller man lifts which can operate indoors to perform tasks in areas such as big office buildings, hotels and sports arenas. They can be powered with electricity. This eliminates the noxious fumes and the hazards associated with them.
Engine-Powered Boom Lifts
If workers have to be transported to their height destination quickly and efficiently, an engine-powered boom lift is the answer. Boom lifts offer a wide range of mobility. These machinery are also capable of being moved in a variety of directions. Boom lifts can also easily fit into narrow spaces. Each and every "joint" in the boom lift is controlled to adjust to various heights in order to place the worker exactly where he or she should be to be able to get the job done. The engine power system is what enables boom lifts to attain their full elevation in not a lot of time. Firefighters usually utilize engine powered boom lifts when they need to quickly ascend to heights during a rescue mission.
